This book opens a couple of weeks after The Scarlet Alchemist leaves off. Zilan and Wenshu are searching for Penglai Island so Zilan can return Wenshu and Yufei to their bodies and bring back everyone who died in the palace coup.
The book opens with Daphne at the Frivian court where we left her, now solidly against her mother and making plans with Violie, Leopold, Cliona, and Bairre. Beatriz, on the other hand, is in a bit more of a bind. Having been captured at the end of Stardust in Their Veins, she now finds herself back in the Cellarian court to be wed...
This book just didn't do it for me. It had elements there that I liked and that should've made this a higher rated read, but it just wasn't working for me. That being said, there's not really a lot wrong with the book, it just ended up not being for me.

This is an interesting book. It reminds me a little bit of City of Stardust or one of Neil Gaiman's books. The story is about Vitrine, sure, but I think it's more about the city of Azril and the way that it changes and the way that it's loved.
I wasn't totally sure what to expect coming into this book, but it is 100% a horror book. Not fantasy horror, horror...and I actually really liked it! While it is straightforward horror, I was invested in the story and the ghosts, and trying to figure out how the ghosts fit in

As usual, Kingfisher does not disappoint. Her books tend to fall into two categories: fairytale-esque or fantasy horror, and this one is one of the fairytale-esque ones. Like Nettle & Bone though, it does have some creepy elements.
This book has an interesting premise: dragons in fantasy Polynesia. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and the magic system of the book and found myself interested in the plot. However, this does feel like a younger YA or MG book rather than a typical YA.
